SAE J3400 and NACS testing
SAE J3400 / NACS EVSE Testing Guide
By APEX · Published · Updated
An SAE J3400 or NACS test plan must explicitly state whether it addresses AC charging, DC charging or both. Match the coupler and cable ratings, pilot and communication functions, power path, measurements and approved abnormal cases to the selected standard edition; the shared connector family does not make AC and DC test coverage interchangeable.
State the AC or DC scope first
Record the SAE J3400 edition, charger implementation, coupler arrangement and whether the project covers AC, DC or defined portions of both. Identify the supply or output limits and communication functions for each mode instead of using NACS as a single undifferentiated equipment requirement.
Add regional installation, safety, metering and customer requirements as separate scope items. A quotation should identify which functions belong to the tester, adapters, instruments and external load.
- ✓ Name the SAE J3400 edition
- ✓ Separate AC and DC requirements
- ✓ Record coupler, cable and power limits
Build the functional and measurement matrix
For AC work, connect simulated vehicle states and pilot behavior with EVSE switching, available-current indication and measured output. For DC work, define the required communication stack, initialization, requested values, high-voltage sequence and external energy-absorption path.
Set evidence depth for each case: functional indication, measured values, waveform or protocol capture, timing and report fields. Confirm optional modules and accuracy before treating a model as suitable.
- ✓ Map states to charger response
- ✓ Define independent measurements
- ✓ Confirm communication and evidence options
Document safe abnormal and recovery cases
List approved pilot, communication, protective or termination conditions one at a time, together with the expected response and recovery. Apply only conditions supported by the equipment and procedure, particularly during field work.
Preserve the charger firmware, tester configuration, standard edition, measured values and limitations with every result. This baseline makes later regression or commissioning comparisons meaningful.
Common questions
Is NACS the same as SAE J3400?
NACS commonly names the connector system, while SAE J3400 standardizes the charging interface. Testing should cite the exact SAE J3400 edition and the AC or DC functions required.
Does one NACS tester automatically cover AC and DC?
No. Confirm AC and DC electrical paths, pilot or communication functions, ratings and test cases separately.
What should be included in an SAE J3400 equipment request?
Provide the standard edition, AC or DC scope, charger and coupler ratings, pilot and communication cases, measurements, faults, workflow and required evidence.
