ISO 15118 and DIN 70121 testing

ISO 15118 & DIN 70121 EV Charger Testing Plan

By APEX · Published · Updated

An ISO 15118 or DIN SPEC 70121 test plan must name the exact protocol edition, supported charging mode and test purpose before equipment is selected. Combine compatible PLC communication hardware and software with control-pilot observation, measured charger output and time-correlated logs; connector compatibility alone does not prove protocol coverage.

Freeze the communication scope

Record whether the project requires DIN SPEC 70121, ISO 15118-2, ISO 15118-20 or a defined combination, together with the charger firmware and intended charging mode. Treat each document and edition as a separate scope item because messages, state behavior and optional functions are not interchangeable.

Define whether the work supports development diagnosis, interoperability, regression or preparation for a formal procedure. The equipment configuration and result language should stay within that purpose and must not imply certification without the applicable accredited process.

  • ✓ Name every protocol and edition
  • ✓ Record charger firmware and charging mode
  • ✓ Define the decision the test supports

Correlate PLC traffic with charger behavior

A useful setup observes the control-pilot state, PLC session and electrical response on a common timeline. Retain raw messages when encoding, sequence or timing matters, and compare requested values with the charger report and independent voltage or current measurements where required.

Confirm which parts of SLAC, session setup, parameter exchange, energy transfer and termination the selected tools can generate and decode. State separately whether certificate handling, Plug & Charge or bidirectional functions are included in the approved scope.

  • ✓ Capture raw PLC messages and timestamps
  • ✓ Align pilot, messages and measurements
  • ✓ List optional security or bidirectional functions

Build repeatable normal and fault cases

Start with one known normal charging path, then change one approved condition at a time. Define the injected message, delay, parameter or termination condition, expected charger response and safe boundary before execution.

Store the tester configuration, protocol stack version, charger identity, measured output and final result with every case. This record helps distinguish a charger defect from a test-tool, connection, load or version mismatch.

Common questions

Is DIN SPEC 70121 the same as ISO 15118?

No. They are related CCS communication specifications with different protocol scope. Name the exact document and edition required by the charger and procedure.

Does a CCS2 connector prove ISO 15118 support?

No. The physical connector, PLC hardware, protocol software and implemented test cases must all be confirmed separately.

Can ISO 15118 communication be tested without rated power?

Many communication and sequence checks can operate at limited power, but the complete setup must still provide a safe, compatible electrical and load path for the chosen case.
